Tottenham Hotspur officially announced on Thursday the signing of 19-year-old Brazilian left-back João Sousa from Santos. According to AS journalist Eduardo Burgos, the two sides have reached an agreement on a five-and-a-half-year contract.
Burgos also pointed out that Sosa's transfer fee was €15 million. After joining Tottenham, he will wear the number 38 jersey.
Sosa is a product of Santos' youth academy and made his first-team debut in the São Paulo State Football League in February 2024. To date, he has made 38 appearances for Santos, scoring one goal and providing four assists.
Regarding Sosa's arrival, Tottenham manager Thomas Frank said: "I am very happy to have Sosa in the squad. He is a talented and promising young full-back with a strong attacking mindset and excellent skills."
“I look forward to working with him and helping to unlock his potential. We believe we have signed one of the most outstanding left-backs in the world, who can contribute to the team now and also represent our future.”
Sousa himself said: "I am incredibly excited to join such a top club as Tottenham. I grew up watching the Premier League, so joining Tottenham is a childhood dream. I can't wait to start this new journey."
“This is an important step in my career. The Premier League is very different from my experience playing in Brazil, and I am very much looking forward to taking on this challenge and becoming a member of the team.”
