Josh Da Silva signs new contract with Brentford

Josh Da Silva has signed a new contract with Brentford, which runs until the end of the season and includes an option for a further year. The midfielder, whose contract was originally due to expire this summer, has extended his stay in west London after remaining at the club to recover from a serious knee ligament injury sustained in February 2024.

Brentford manager Keith Andrews said: "I have been keen to get this done and have had discussions with Phil Giles about the importance of Josh Da Silva. I have also been involved in a number of matters regarding the future direction of the club and what needs to be done."

"Josh Da Silva is very familiar with Brentford Football Club. He is an intelligent young player who cares deeply about the club and I think that cannot be ignored. "The most important thing is that we want him back on the pitch and once he is back to his best he will be a great asset to the team."

After 12 years at Arsenal's academy, 19-year-old Josh Da Silva joined Brentford, signing a four-year contract in August 2018. He missed nearly a year with a hip injury starting in March 2021. However, after recovering and completing a full pre-season, Da Silva played in 36 of Brentford's 38 Premier League games in the 2022/23 season.

Josh Da Silva's injury problems continued, as he suffered a hamstring problem in the opening game of the 2023/24 season, which kept him out for four months. Subsequently, after just four appearances, he ruptured his anterior cruciate ligament in training in February 2024. Since then, the 27-year-old has been undergoing rehabilitation at the club and will be entering his eighth season with the club.

After signing his new contract, Josh Da Silva said: "It has been a long journey and I am very grateful to the club for giving me the opportunity to continue playing. Opportunities like this don't come around very often. It has been a tough journey but I am grateful and I can't wait to enjoy football again with my teammates and put on the jersey again."

"I underwent surgery on my anterior cruciate ligament, medial collateral ligament and meniscus in early February 2024, and two more surgeries six months and eight months later. This is why I was unable to play for a long time. The process was very difficult and full of uncertainty. But the club, my faith, friends and family gave me great support. Despite the difficulties, I still gained a lot of experience and gains from it."

Josh Da Silva's last game for the club was against Tottenham Hotspur on January 31, 2024, when the team lost 3-2.

He continued: "At the moment, I'm doing my rehabilitation training outdoors, which includes dribbling and running. I've been doing this for a few weeks now and hope to be able to rejoin the team in training in the next month or so. I'm trying not to look too far ahead and just focus on my progress every day. At the moment, my next goal is to get back into the team, which I hope to achieve around the next international break."
