The Los Angeles Lakers announced that they will unveil a statue of legendary head coach Pat Riley on February 22, 2026.
The ceremony will be held at Star Plaza before the Los Angeles Lakers' home game against the Boston Celtics.
The Los Angeles Lakers originally planned to dedicate a statue to Riley in 2026, but now the date has been set. Riley will become the eighth player in the franchise to receive the honor, joining Jerry West, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Magic Johnson, Kobe Bryant, Shaquille O'Neal, Chick Hearn and Elgin Baylor.
While coaching the Lakers from 1981 to 1990, Riley led the team to four NBA championships and won at least 50 games in all nine seasons, including five seasons with more than 60 wins.
Riley was named NBA Coach of the Year in the 1989-90 season with a 63-19 record. His 533 regular season wins rank second only to Phil Jackson among Los Angeles Lakers coaches, and his total wins (including playoffs) are a staggering 635.
Riley's connection to the Los Angeles Lakers extends beyond his coaching career. He played for the team as a shooting guard from 1970 to 1975, averaging 7.8 points per game and being a key member of the team's 33-game winning streak and championship in the 1971-72 season. After retiring, he served as an assistant coach for three seasons, during which time the Lakers won two more championships.
After leaving the Los Angeles Lakers, Riley coached the New York Knicks and then the Miami Heat, leading the Miami Heat to a championship in 2006. He is currently the president and minority shareholder of the Miami Heat. As an NBA head coach, Riley has amassed 1,210 victories, ranking fifth all-time.
