Real Betis announced on Friday that they have extended the contract of their manager, Manuel Pellegrini. The new contract extends the original expiry date of 2026 by one year, until June 30, 2027.
Since taking over Real Betis in August 2020, Pellegrini has achieved a record of 130 wins, 72 draws, and 73 losses in all competitions. With 275 matches in charge, the 72-year-old has broken the previous record (263 matches) held by Lorenzo Serra Ferrer, becoming the manager with the most matches in Betis' history.
Under Pellegrini's guidance, Betis first won the Copa del Rey in 2022 after a 17-year drought, and then reached the final of the European Championship last season. Although they ultimately lost 1-4 to Chelsea and finished as runners-up, Pellegrini's coaching performance still received widespread recognition from the club's management and the outside world.
Besides Real Betis, Pellegrini has also coached numerous teams including Universidad de Chile, Palestine, O'Higgins, Universidad Catholica, LDU Quito, San Lorenzo, River Plate, Villarreal, Real Madrid, Malaga, Manchester City, Hebei China Fortune, and West Ham United. His honors include one Copa America title, one Chilean Cup title, one Ecuadorian First Division title, one Mercosur Cup title, two Argentine Primera División titles, two Intertoto Cup titles, one English Premier League title, and two English League Cup titles.
Following the contract extension, Real Betis president Angel Jarrow said: "The result is very positive and expected. We have worked with Manuel for a long time and he has brought unprecedented stability to the team on the pitch. We are very satisfied with his work."
“We have stated many times that we will only renew the contract when the conditions are right and the timing is right. Now the time has come, and we have completed the renewal as scheduled.”
“We have always emphasized that this is the result of teamwork. The coach, coaching staff, players, and club all fulfilled their responsibilities and, to some extent, created a wonderful chemistry. We hope to continue this partnership.”
Pellegrini was also satisfied with the contract extension: "I am very happy. The past five years have been wonderful, not only because of our achievements on the field, but also because of the support from everyone."
“I believe the management, coaching staff, players, and fans have all done an important job together to put a great club with so many fans back where it belongs. Staying at Betis is my top priority, and I’m glad we finally reached an agreement.”
