Nigerian captain William Trost-Ekong released a statement on Thursday confirming the end of his decade-long international career.
Ekong, 32, was born in Haarlem, Netherlands, to a Nigerian father. He began playing for Nigeria in June 2015, making 83 appearances, scoring 8 goals and providing 1 assist.
During his time with Nigeria, Ekong participated in three Africa Cup of Nations (2019, 2022, 2024) and one World Cup (2018). His last match for the national team was the World Cup African qualifier semi-final on November 13.
Now, Ekong has decided to retire from the Nigerian national team, where he has served for 10 years. In a statement, he reflected on his national team career and thanked all those who supported him: "In 2015, a phone call from the late Stephen Kessie completely changed my life. A month later, he gave me my national team debut. His trust in me ignited my desire to follow in his footsteps."
“Every time I step onto the field in that iconic jersey, I recall that moment. To be the captain of the Nigerian team was far beyond my wildest dreams. Nigeria accepted me and trusted me to lead and represent this country of 230 million people. For a boy born and raised in the Netherlands, this honor will be a cherished memory for the rest of my life.”
"Being able to play 83 times for the senior national team, participate in five major tournaments and serve as captain has far exceeded my wildest dreams. From winning bronze at the 2016 Rio Olympics, to competing in the 2018 Russia World Cup, and then winning bronze and silver medals in three Africa Cup of Nations campaigns—these experiences will be unforgettable for me."
"Leading Nigeria to the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, scoring in the final and winning the tournament's best player award is an experience that means a lot to me. To this day, I still wish the outcome had been different. Becoming the highest-scoring defender in Africa Cup of Nations history is an honor shared with all my teammates. That tournament taught me the true spirit of Nigeria: in adversity, we unite, fight hard, persevere through pain, and ultimately rise up."
"When I look back on those milestone moments, I feel a deep sense of peace—because I know I have given it my all. It's not just for myself, but also to inspire the next generation, just as those legendary figures I admired inspired me. It has been an honor to fight alongside them."
“The years I spent fighting alongside my Nigerian teammates were filled with joy. Together we achieved great things and witnessed them grow into leaders. Now, it’s time to pass on the responsibility, opportunity, and captain’s armband to the next generation. As the guardian of this legendary jersey, I always understand that this is only a temporary honor. It’s time for the new generation to continue writing their own chapter.”
“As a Nigerian of Chinese descent born overseas, I am incredibly proud to be a part of this team – we have fully demonstrated the possibility of returning home to serve and fight for our country.”
"Without the support of those around me, none of this would have been possible. Thank you to every coach, staff member, and all my current and former teammates who have been with me on my international journey."
"Thank you to the Nigerian fans – you are the heartbeat of Nigerian football. Your support has accompanied me through every highlight and challenge. I will stand with you, just as you have always supported me."
"This is not goodbye. I will continue to serve the Nigerian community. My love and passion for the team will never fade. The past decade has been filled with dedication, pride and unforgettable memories. Wearing the Nigerian jersey is not just about playing football, but a mission, an honor and a supreme privilege."
