The Philadelphia 76ers have had a perfect start to the season, even with star center Joel Embiid's playing time still being strictly limited.
After defeating the Washington Wizards 139-134 in overtime in their recent game, the team improved their record to 4-0 to start the season. Embiid played only 23 minutes and scored 25 points, but left the game to watch during the crucial moments of the fourth quarter.
Head coach Nick Nurse explained that the team is still figuring out how to balance player workload with overall pace: "No matter who's on the court, we have to give it our all."
Embiid admitted after the game that the minutes restriction was extremely frustrating, but the victory made everything acceptable. Embiid said, "When we started to find our rhythm in the fourth quarter, I hoped to stay on the court."
"It's really frustrating, but I'm happy as long as the team wins. It's only when we lose, and I feel like I could have done more, that I feel bad."
Under Nurse's new system, the 76ers emphasize ball movement and speed, with Tyrese Maxey, VJ Edgecombe, and Quentin Grimes leading the perimeter offense. Embiid acknowledged that this is a change he needs to adapt to, but he welcomes the team's progress.
"Our offense requires everyone to participate. Whoever is open should take the shot, and if not, we should pass the ball again," Embiid added.
While Embiid's stats may fluctuate, he and the team believe that the new system and rest strategy are key to long-term competitiveness. For the 76ers, who only won 24 games last season, the current winning streak and team-oriented style of play may be heralding a completely different new beginning.
