The Los Angeles Lakers announced Thursday the appointment of 56-year-old Tony Bennett as NBA draft advisor to President of Basketball Operations and General Manager Rob Pelinka. TA reporter Dan Wojker added that he will not lead the Lakers' draft decisions or scouting activities.

Regarding Bennett's arrival, Bennett commented, "We are delighted and honored to welcome Tony to the Lakers' basketball operations department as an advisor. As we continue to refine and expand our NBA draft and scouting system, there is no better basketball strategist than Tony Bennett to assist us."

“Tony has an exceptional track record in building team culture. He excels at developing players with outstanding character, superb skills, and high basketball IQ, which is why he is highly regarded throughout the basketball world. Tony will be a valuable asset to our basketball management, scouting team, and the entire draft department. We are very excited about his joining us.”

Bennett played for the Charlotte Hornets for three seasons during his playing career. After retiring in 1998, he transitioned into coaching with the Northport Kings. He previously coached Washington State University and the University of Virginia, leading them to a record of 433 wins and 169 losses, and winning six ACC regular season championships, two ACC tournament championships, and one NCAA national championship.

For this achievement, Bennett was named the National Coach of the Year three times (2007, 2015, 2018). He also contributed 13 outstanding players to the NBA, including DeAndre Hunter, Ty Jerome, and Malcolm Brogdon.

In October 2024, Bennett unexpectedly announced his retirement from coaching. Now working in the Lakers' front office, he explained in a statement: "When I started talking to Rob, what attracted me most was the opportunity to contribute to a team with such a rich history. The Lakers' illustrious heritage needs no introduction. I am thrilled to be a part of it and to do everything I can to help Rob and the Lakers."
