Former Argentine goalkeeper Sergio Romero has confirmed his retirement at the age of 39.

Infobae confirmed on Monday that former Argentine goalkeeper Sergio Romero has decided to retire.

Since leaving Argentine Juniors in January of this year, Romero has been unemployed. The 39-year-old decided to end his 19-year professional career mainly because the numerous offers he received could not satisfy his wish to stay in Buenos Aires and be with his family.

As one of Argentina's most iconic goalkeepers, Romero's professional career began on February 12, 2007. At the club level, he played for Atlético Aveana, AZ Alkmaar, Sampdoria, Monaco, Manchester United, Venezia, Boca Juniors, and Argentine Juniors, making a total of 371 appearances and keeping 150 clean sheets. He also won the Eredivisie title, the Dutch Super Cup, the Europa League, the FA Cup, the English League Cup, the Community Shield, and the Argentine Super Cup.

At the national team level, Romero also made outstanding contributions. From 2009 to 2018, he made a total of 96 appearances for the Argentine national team, including two World Cups (2010, 2014) and three Copa Americas (2011, 2015, 2016).

As for his post-retirement career plans, Romero has confirmed that he will transition into coaching. He obtained his coaching license back in 2023, and his coaching team has already been assembled.

In January of this year, Romero said in an interview with DSports Radio: "If I can no longer continue my professional career, I am ready to step out of the boundaries of my playing career and start a coaching career that could be very good."

He added, "I have made all the plans and preparations, and I am just waiting to make the decision. I will take this step without hesitation. I watch football matches frequently; I enjoy following various countries and their leagues, even the lower leagues."

"My coaching style? As Menotti said, football is about moments, names, and adapting to the existing squad. Playing in Europe and being mentored by Van Gaal, Mourinho, Tata Martino, and Alejandro Sabella helped me find my direction."
