Nagelsmann clarified his remarks were not intended to offend Northern Ireland

Germany coach Julian Nagelsmann has clarified on the eve of a World Cup qualifier that his comments about Northern Ireland were not made out of disrespect but were based on positive feedback about their tactical style.

Germany will face Michael O'Neill's Northern Ireland away at Windsor Park on Monday night. Nagelsmann sparked controversy last month after his side's 3-1 victory in Cologne when he said Northern Ireland played an unattractive game and played too many long balls.

Former Northern Ireland defender Stephen Craigan thought Nagelsmann's remarks were disrespectful, and O'Neill responded by saying he would not make lineups to please rival coaches.

Facing criticism, Nagelsmann explained in the pre-match press conference: "I said that their style of play may not be pleasing to the eye, but that is not derogatory. What really matters is that they did it very well and played long balls with ideas."

"They defended solidly, conceded very few goals and were also dangerous from set pieces. If anyone felt offended, I sincerely apologize. I meant no disrespect and my words were meant out of respect."

Germany and Northern Ireland are tied on six points in World Cup qualifying Group A, with Germany leading only on goal difference. Northern Ireland are unbeaten in seven games at home at Windsor Park, and Nagelsmann admitted the match would not be easy.

Northern Ireland defeated Slovakia 2-0 last week, while Germany easily defeated Luxembourg. With the two teams about to face a crucial match, Nagelsmann emphasized: "We saw it in their game against Slovakia as well. They did a very good job and created a lot of pressure in the final third. Northern Ireland will not be easily beaten."
