The Golden State Warriors officially announced on Tuesday that their star forward Jimmy Butler will miss the remainder of the season due to a torn ACL in his right knee.
The team stated that Butler will undergo surgery at a later date, and the specific recovery timeline is yet to be confirmed. This distressing injury occurred during the Warriors' highly anticipated game against the Miami Heat on Monday.
Facing his former team, Butler suffered an unexpected setback during an offensive play in the third quarter. He received the ball in the paint and collided with Heat player Davyn Mitchell, losing his balance and landing with a severely twisted right knee.
Butler immediately collapsed to the ground in pain, clutching his knee for several minutes and unable to get up. Eventually, with the help of teammates Gary Payton II and Buddy Hield, Butler was escorted back to the locker room, ending the game prematurely.
Despite the severity of his injury, the six-time All-Star displayed his signature toughness on the court. Warriors star Stephen Curry revealed after the game that Butler was even joking while lying on the ground undergoing examination, claiming he should have received two free throws.
Head coach Steve Kerr expressed his deep regret over Butler's injury. He praised Butler as the team's recognized leader and key decision-maker. As the team's second-leading scorer after Curry, Butler averaged 20.1 points, 5.6 rebounds, and 4.9 assists per game this week, making him an indispensable part of the Warriors' offensive and defensive system.
Jimmy Butler's season-ending injury has undoubtedly cast a shadow over the Warriors' originally bright prospects for the season, and the team will have to readjust its tactical deployment after losing this offensive and defensive linchpin.
