On August 13, according to HoopsHype reporter Michael Scotto, the team signed former Dallas Mavericks forward Kessler Edwards to add more flexibility and depth to Nikola Jokic in the frontcourt.
Edwards played for the Mavericks on a two-way contract last season. Due to injuries to big men like Anthony Davis, Daniel Gafford, and Derek Lively II, he saw significant playing time, even playing small-ball center, a position he had never played before, and performed well. In 40 games for the Mavericks , he averaged 4.2 points and 2.9 rebounds per game, while shooting a career-high 40.9% from three-point range.
The forward, selected 44th overall by the Brooklyn Nets in the 2021 NBA Draft , was traded to the Sacramento Kings after a year and a half with the Nets in exchange for the signing rights to David Mischino, who had never played in the NBA. This move was more of a salary-clearing operation. He then spent a year and a half with the Kings before signing a two-way contract with the Mavericks upon the expiration of his contract. On March 10, 2025 , he scored 22 points and 11 rebounds against the Spurs , both of which set new personal single-game highs.
It's worth noting that the Nuggets have already signed four players with Mavericks ties this summer . In addition to Edwards, the Nuggets also signed veteran scorer Tim Hardaway, hired Jared Dudley as head assistant coach, and added 2011 championship team member JJ Barea to the coaching staff. The Mavericks, on the other hand, hired assistant coach Popeye Jones, who had been with the Nuggets since 2021 .
The addition of Edwards not only provides defense and spacing on the front line, but also brings more tactical options to the team's rotation. In the new season, his chemistry with Jokic will be one of the highlights for Nuggets fans.
