Union Berlin officially announced on Tuesday that they have extended the contract of their legendary captain Christoph Trimmel. The new contract is expected to run from 2026 to June 30, 2027, but this has not yet been officially confirmed.

The 38-year-old Trimmel primarily plays as a right-back, but can also play as a right midfielder and center-back. He previously played for Horijon and Rapid Vienna before joining Union Berlin as a free agent in July 2014.

To date, Trimmel has made 378 appearances for Union Berlin, scoring 6 goals and providing 70 assists. He has also been involved in many important moments for Union Berlin, including promotion to the Bundesliga and successfully avoiding relegation, as well as competing in the 2021/22 Europa League and the 2023/24 UEFA Champions League.

As for the national team, Trimmel has made 25 appearances for Austria so far, contributing 1 goal and 2 assists.

After completing the contract extension, Trimmel said with joy: "Looking back on my time at Union Berlin, my deepest feeling is gratitude. I have gained a lot of experience here, grown into a better player and a better man, and participated in the club's unprecedented development. For me, Union Berlin is more than just a club; it makes me feel at home and I am eager to continue to do my best here."

Horst Helter, head of men's professional football at Union Berlin, added: "In recent years, Trimmel has been the best representative of Union Berlin's development. He takes responsibility on the field, leads the team as captain, and has always been closely connected with the club. This contract extension is not only a reflection of our trust and gratitude for him, but also an important symbol of our team's continuity."
