The Charlotte Hornets are about to waive 32-year-old veteran guard Spencer Dinwiddie, ESPN's Shams Charania reported Thursday.
The Hornets had 16 players on standard contracts before Dinwiddie was removed, and this move means they have now controlled the number of players under the league's maximum limit of 15. According to NBA regulations, each team can have a maximum of 15 players on standard contracts and 3 players on two-way contracts before the start of the regular season.
Dinwiddie played for the Dallas Mavericks last season, playing in 79 regular season games, averaging 11.0 points, 2.6 rebounds, and 4.4 assists per game, shooting 39.7% from the field and 38.9% from three-point range. He officially became an unrestricted free agent this offseason but soon signed a one-year contract with the Hornets.
In addition to the Mavericks, Dinwiddie has also played for several teams, including the Detroit Pistons, Brooklyn Nets, Washington Wizards, and Los Angeles Lakers. In his 11-year NBA career, he played in 621 regular-season games, averaging 13.0 points, 3.0 rebounds, and 5.1 assists per game while shooting 41.4% from the field and 33.3% from three-point range.
It seemed to outsiders that 32-year-old guard Pat Connaughton, with a salary of $9.4 million, was more likely to be the target of the Hornets' cleanup, but it was Dinwiddie who was eventually cut. The Hornets chose to keep Connaughton, perhaps considering his potential trade value and three-point shooting ability.
With core point guard LaMelo Ball suffering from frequent injuries, the Hornets' move also reflects their confidence in 24-year-old Trey Mann. The Hornets management believes that Trey Mann can not only play the role of backup point guard, but can even replace his starting position when Ball is absent.
