The Athletic reported on Sunday, citing TMZ, that Phoenix Suns small forward / shooting guard Dillon Brooks was arrested for driving under influence.

According to the report, Scottsdale Police said that Brooks was pulled over around 1:00 AM for a traffic violation south of Thunderbird Road on Scottsdale Road. Following an investigation, Brooks was arrested at 1:33 AM on suspicion of driving under the influence.

He was subsequently enrolled in the Scottsdale City Prison and released around 3:30 AM. The city attorney's office will decide whether to file charges against him.

According to a statement from Scottsdale Police, after pulling Brooks over, they told him they observed him failing to "keep in his lane" six times. Brooks said that he was following the vehicle in front of him at the time.

Police also said that Brooks' car had a very strong smell of marijuana, but the player consistently denied that he had last used marijuana some time ago and did not have any marijuana in his car at the time.

He also insisted he hadn't been drinking that night, saying his last drink was six months ago.

Nevertheless, the officers on duty believed the strong smell emanating from his car resembled that of a marijuana dispensary, and therefore decided to make an on-the-spot arrest.

After asking Brooks to get out of the car, the officers conducted a series of on-site sobriety tests on him before arresting him.

In his breathalyzer test, Brooks was told his result was zero.

On the way to the Scottsdale Prison, Brooks asked the officers if they had video footage of his alleged lane violation. The officers said no. Brooks also noticed that the officers, on the way to the jail, crossed lanes while driving, just as he was accused of doing.

In Arizona, even if adults legally use marijuana, drivers can still be prosecuted for driving under the influence of marijuana.

On Thursday night, the Suns lost 103-105 to the Chicago Bulls at their home arena, the Mortgage Center. Brooks, who missed the game due to a fractured left hand, watched from the bench in casual clothes.

The 30-year-old Brooks is currently in his ninth NBA season, his first since joining the Phoenix Suns.

He was one of the key assets in the Suns' trade to the Houston Rockets this summer to acquire Kevin Durant.

For most of the season, he has been a key factor in the Phoenix Suns' success, bringing previously lacking defensive intensity and toughness to the team.

In 50 games played, Brooks has averaged 20.9 points and 3.7 rebounds.
