On July 24, ESPN's famous reporter Shams Charania reported that guard Jordan Goodwin has been signed by the Phoenix Suns after being waived by the Los Angeles Lakers, and will return to the team he once played for in the 2025-26 season.
According to Shams , the Lakers chose to cut Goodwin in order to free up roster space to successfully complete the signing of veteran guard Marcus Smart. After a short period of becoming a free agent, the Suns quickly took action and claimed the 26- year-old backcourt player from the clarification list .
Goodwin played 29 games for the Lakers in the 2024-25 regular season, including 5 games as a starter. Throughout the season, he averaged 18.7 minutes per game, contributing 5.6 points, 3.9 rebounds and 1.4 assists, and had a 38.2% three-point shooting percentage from the outside, showing a certain stable shooting ability.
It is worth mentioning that Goodwin played for the Suns briefly in the 2023-24 season, when he played 40 regular season games for the team, averaging 14 minutes per game, scoring 5 points, 2.9 rebounds and 2.0 assists. This past experience has given him a certain familiarity with the team system, and also made the Suns management more confident in bringing him back to the team during the lineup adjustment.
With Goodwin's return, the Suns have strengthened their backcourt depth to a certain extent. Although he is unlikely to become a main player, he is expected to take on key tasks in the substitute rotation with his stable role performance and certain defensive toughness. For the young guard, returning to the Suns is not only an opportunity to prove himself again, but also a turning point in his career.
