Real Madrid announced on its official website on Monday that it has triggered the buyback clause of Benfica's Spain international defender wonderkid Álvaro Carreras.
According to Real Madrid's official statement, Carreras has signed on a long-term six-year deal with the club which runs until the summer of 2031.
In addition, according to the news brought by Spanish online media outlet Relevo's renowned Italian transfer journalist Matteo Moretto, although Carreras joined Benfica from Manchester United during the process, Real Madrid still retained the player's buyback clause.
In order to trigger this buyback clause, the La Liga giants paid Benfica a total of €50 million in transfer fees, but €6 million of it will belong to Manchester United.
About Álvaro Carreras
Carreras, who is only 22 years old, was born on March 22, 2003 in Ferrol, Galicia Autonomous Region, Spain. He is 1.86 meters tall and primarinly plays as a left-wingback. He can also play as a left midfielder or center back.
Carreras played for the youth academy of the non-league club Galicia de Carranza when he was a child, and then played for the youth academy of his hometown club Racing Ferrol. In 2012, he joined the Deportivo La Coruña youth academy, and in 2012, he moved to Real Madrid's famous La Fabrica youth academy. In September 2020, he joined Manchester United's youth academy.
The following summer, Carreras began to play for Manchester United's U21s team. In April 2022, he was named as a substitute player in the Premier League match between the Red Devils and Brighton, but did not get the opportunity to complete his Manchester United first-team debut.
During this spell, he also played for Preston and Wigan Athletic on-loan.
In January 2024, Carreras joined Benfica on-loan with an option to buy. Later, his ownership was bought out for €6 million, but both Manchester United and Real Madrid reserved the right to buy back the player.
During his time with As Ãguias, Carreras played 68 times for the Portuguese Primeira Liga giants in all competitions, scoring 5 goals, 6 assists, and won the Taça da Liga with the club.
