In the fifth round of the 2025/26 UEFA Champions League, Marseille hosted Newcastle United. They fell behind early but ultimately came from behind to win thanks to a brace from Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.
Newcastle United took the initiative from the start, opening the scoring for Marseille just six minutes after Harvey Barnes scored with a low shot. Prior to that, Malik Joe nearly scored with a header, but it was cleared off the line by Pierre-Emile Højbjerg.
Following this, both sides engaged in a fierce attacking exchange. In the 18th minute, Mason Greenwood delivered a through ball down the right flank, and Aubameyang's shot from a tight angle near the near post was blocked by Nick Pope. In the 19th minute, Greenwood provided a brilliant pass, and Aubameyang chested the ball down before turning and firing a shot, which was again saved. In the 23rd minute, Tonali's cross was blocked by an opposing player, and he opted to shoot himself, but it was caught by Girona Rulli. In the 31st minute, Bruno Guimarães passed the ball to the right flank, and Joe Willock's powerful shot was also blocked by Rulli.
In the 37th minute, Greenwood crossed from the right, and Aubameyang's header in the penalty area went wide of the right side. In the 43rd minute, Willock played a through ball to Gordon, whose shot was saved by Rulli.
Newcastle United led by one goal at halftime, but squandered their advantage just 20 seconds into the second half: Daryl Bacora delivered a long pass from midfield, and Aubameyang rounded the reckless Pope before scoring from an incredible angle. In the 48th minute, the Magpies missed another chance to extend their lead: Willock's shot inside the box forced Rulli to dive and save, and Harvey Barnes followed up with a tap-in, but the linesman flagged for offside.
In the 50th minute, Marseille took the lead after a breakout performance from Aubameyang: Timothy Weah crossed from the right, and Aubameyang pounced on the loose ball to score again. A minute later, Weah again delivered a cross from the right, but Højbjerg's shot was easily saved by Pope. In the 56th minute, Greenwood's shot was also saved by Pope.
In the 59th minute, Guimarães received the ball on the left wing and crossed it into the penalty area, where Willock's shot was brilliantly saved by Rulli. In the 78th and 79th minutes, Anthony Elanga and Dan Byrne both had their shots saved by Rulli.
Neither side managed to score again. At the final whistle, Marseille defeated Newcastle United 2-1.
