Cam Thomas' contract extension is pending and he may leave as a free agent next year

On August 11, NBA reporter Jake Fischer reported that Brooklyn Nets restricted free agent Cam Thomas is considering accepting a qualifying offer worth $6 million. He will continue to play for the Nets in the 2025-26 season and plans to fight for a bigger contract as a free agent in 2026.
Sources reveal that Cam Thomas is leaning toward accepting a one-year, $6 million qualifying offer, which would allow him to become an unrestricted free agent after the 2025-26 season and secure a larger contract next summer. According to ESPN salary expert Bobby Marks , Thomas has until October 1st to sign the offer. Fischer, however , adds that the Nets have not yet expressed interest in reaching a long-term contract with Thomas, and contract extension talks appear relatively cool.
The 23- year-old Thomas showed excellent scoring ability last season, averaging 24.0 points and 3.8 assists per game, shooting 43.8% from the field , 34.9% from three-point range , and 88.1% from the free throw line . However, he played in only 25 games, missing most of the season due to a hamstring injury.
On offense, his scoring ability is undoubtedly a highlight, but his passing and defense still have room for improvement. He has averaged 2.1 assists and 1.4 turnovers per game throughout his career . Last season, the Nets' defensive efficiency rating with him on the court was a team-worst at 120.6.
With the situation of a restricted free agent uncertain, if Thomas chooses to sign a one-year qualifying offer, he will have the opportunity to show more consistent performance in the new season and strive for a larger, longer-term contract in the summer of 2026. This will not only be another verification of his personal ability, but also may become a key turning point in his career.
