Barcelona announced on their official website on Friday that the club have extended the contract of their Spain international defender Eric García.
According to Barça's official statement, García has signed on a new long-term six-year deal which runs until the summer of 2031. Furthermore, in accordance with La Liga's regulations, his release clause has been increased to €500 million. Garcia's official contract signing ceremony and press conference will take place on December 11th.
About Eric García
The 24-year-old Eric García was born on January 9, 2001, in Martorell, Catalonia, Spain. He is 1.80 meters tall and primarily plays as a center-back, but can also play as a right-back.
García joined Barcelona's renowned La Masia youth academy at the age of seven. In 2017, he was scouted and poached by Manchester City's youth academy and completed his Manchester City first-team debut in the Carabao Cup quarter-finals match against Leicester City in December of the following year.
During his three-year spell with Manchester City, García won one Premier League title, one Carabao Cup, and one Community Shield, as well as reaching the Champions League final once with the club.
After his contract expired in the summer of 2021, García returned to Barcelona as a free agent.
During this time, he also played on-loan at Girona, where his outstanding performances made him one of the club's and La Liga's top-scoring defenders of the year.
Upon returning to Barcelona in the summer of 2024, García became a key player in the first-team.
Since joining the Blaugrana, García has made 135 appearances for Barça in all competitions so far, scoring 7 goals and providing 6 assists, as well as winning two La Liga titles, two Supercopa de Españá and one Copa del Rey with the club.
