Augsburg announced on Wednesday that they have dismissed Sandro Wagner as head coach. They have also appointed club development director Manuel Baum to temporarily take over the first team until the winter break.
Wagner officially took over Augsburg in July this year, with his term originally scheduled to end in June 2028. However, Augsburg's performance at the start of this season has been less than ideal: after a 0-3 defeat to Hoffenheim last weekend, they are currently ranked 14th in Serie A with a record of 3 wins, 1 draw and 4 losses, accumulating 10 points.
Regarding the decision to change managers, Augsburg CEO Michael Strohl explained: "We sincerely thank Sandro and his team for their hard work and passion for Augsburg. We held talks after the match against Hoffenheim and realized that the team had lost the belief and determination to turn things around with the current squad. Every decision we make is based on Augsburg's best interests, hence this conclusion."
Augsburg's sporting director, Benny Weber, added: "Wagner has done his utmost over the past few months, pushing forward several key initiatives for the club. We are deeply grateful for that. As a club, we remain confident in the direction we have chosen and will continue to move forward along this path. Our current priority is to get the team back on track and earn points in the upcoming matches."
Wagner stated, "I gave my all and was passionate during my time at Augsburg. We had hoped to implement significant reforms together, but unfortunately, we were unable to achieve our goals within the limited timeframe. I want to thank everyone at the club for their trust and support. I sincerely wish Augsburg all the best for the future."
