After missing nine games due to right knee soreness, Philadelphia 76ers star center and 2023 NBA MVP Joel Embiid finally returned to the starting lineup in Sunday's game against the Atlanta Hawks.
Embiid performed well in pre-game practice and was officially cleared to play after being evaluated by the team's medical staff, marking a significant turning point for the 76ers this season. Embiid has only played in 6 of 20 games this season, averaging 19.7 points and 5.5 rebounds per game.
During Embiid's absence, the 76ers' record hovered around .50. In contrast, Embiid's performance resulted in a 4-2 record, highlighting his importance to the team.
Embiid last played on November 8 in a victory against the Toronto Raptors, but missed the following day due to being barred from participating in back-to-back games during his recovery period from surgery. Although he underwent surgery on his left knee in April, it was right knee soreness that sidelined him this time.
The 76ers are about to face a packed schedule, with the Washington Wizards, Golden State Warriors, Milwaukee Bucks, and Los Angeles Lakers in the next seven days. Joel Embiid's condition and health are particularly crucial.
Embiid has been plagued by injuries over the past few years. Last season, he played only 19 games before undergoing arthroscopic surgery for a left knee problem and being declared out for the rest of the season in February. Earlier in his career, he also suffered from multiple injuries, including a stress fracture in his right foot, a torn meniscus, an orbital fracture, a shoulder sprain, and Bell's paralysis.
Nevertheless, the 76ers still offered Embiid a massive 3-year, $193 million contract extension in 2024, demonstrating the team's long-term trust in him.
