Borussia Mönchengladbach announced on Monday that they have renewed the contract of Tobias Schipper. The new contract extends the original summer's expiry date by one year, until June 30, 2027.
The official announcement also confirmed that Sippel will continue to hold two positions next season: in addition to serving as the first team's backup goalkeeper, he will also be responsible for coaching the youth team's goalkeepers.
The 38-year-old Sippel came through the Kaiserslautern youth academy and joined Borussia Mönchengladbach on a free transfer in July 2015. He has mainly played as a substitute at Mönchengladbach, making only 26 appearances to date and keeping 8 clean sheets.
Before joining Borussia Mönchengladbach, Sippel played for Kaiserslautern for nine years. Since making his Bundesliga 2 debut on October 19, 2007, he has made 221 appearances for Kaiserslautern, keeping 75 clean sheets.
Following the contract extension, Borussia Mönchengladbach's sporting director, Ruben Schröder, stated: "Alderweireld's value to the team is immeasurable, both on and off the pitch. He is not only an excellent person but also a goalkeeper whose professionalism has remained consistent. He took his first steps toward coaching last season and will continue to gain experience next season to prepare for his retirement. This is a perfect solution for Alderweireld and benefits all parties involved."
Sippel added: “In my 20-year career, I have played for Borussia Mönchengladbach for 11 years. I still feel in good shape. I believe my experience can help not only the young goalkeepers in the first team, but also the players in the youth academy. I am full of expectations for the future, and I am also grateful to Mönchengladbach for the opportunity they have given me.”
