Fulham, after coming back from a goal down in the 2025/26 EFL Cup quarter-finals thanks to a late goal from Sasha Lukic, conceded a late equalizer and were ultimately eliminated 1-2 by Newcastle United. Marco Silva stated that losing at the same venue was a difficult result to accept.

Jacob Murphy's cross in the 10th minute was cleared, and then Visa stepped up and slotted home to give Newcastle a 1-0 lead. In the 16th minute, Anthony Robbinson delivered a cross, and Sasha Lukic headed the ball into the net to level the score at 1-1 for Fulham.

In stoppage time of the second half, Tonali took a corner kick, and Lewis Miley rose up to head the ball into the goal, helping Newcastle regain the lead over Fulham 2-1.

Ultimately, Fulham lost 1-2 to Newcastle at St James' Park, failing to advance to the semi-finals.

It's worth mentioning that Fulham suffered a 1-2 defeat away to Eddie Howe's team in the Premier League this season.

Fulham manager Marco Silva said, "It's really hard to accept this result. Just two months later, we lost to each other in the same way and at the last minute. It's really painful for us, as we were looking forward to reaching the semi-finals of this tournament next month."

"Overall, we were clearly better in the first half than in the second. Even though we conceded an early goal in the first half, it was a bit unlucky in its manner, but the team reacted very well and scored a brilliant goal. We were able to compete with our opponents in the first half. At times Newcastle had the upper hand, while at other times we controlled possession. After equalizing, Kevin had a chance to score a second goal for us."

Marco Silva pointed out, "Newcastle had a couple of good moments in the first half, but I think overall we played the way we wanted in the first half. However, it was much more difficult in the second half. We had a harder time building our own attack, and at times our defense dropped too deep."

“Aside from the save before the corner and a couple of crosses, they didn’t actually create many chances. That’s the problem; they weren’t really threatening. They controlled the game more and were more active in our attacking third, but they didn’t create any real scoring opportunities.”

In addition, Marco Silva said, "We failed to control the tempo of the game, failed to organize our attacks as we hoped, and our counter-attacks and fast breaks did not work."

“We had a couple of good moments in the second half, but they weren’t great chances and didn’t pose a significant threat. Even so, it was really hard to accept that we lost the game in the final moments due to a set piece.”
