San Antonio Spurs legendary coach Gregg Popovich officially announced his resignation as head coach on May 3, ending his 29-year NBA coaching career.
The departure of Popovich, a five-time champion and one of the most successful NBA coaches of all time, marks the end of an era. Popovich released a statement saying, "While I still love and have a passion for the game, I have decided that it is time to step down as head coach."
"I am forever grateful to the players, coaches, staff and fans who have made me the head coach of the San Antonio Spurs and am excited to continue supporting this organization and city in other capacities."
The 76-year-old Popovich missed most of the season due to a sudden stroke in November last year. He only coached the first five games before handing over the job to assistant coach Mitch Johnson. At the beginning of the new season, Johnson will officially take over as the team's head coach, while Popovich will become the team's president and continue to participate in team building.
Since becoming head coach in 1996, Popovich has coached 1,422 regular season victories and 170 playoff wins. He created the San Antonio Spurs dynasty with his military-like coaching style, rigorous tactical system and distinctive personality, and won wide respect from players and peers.
Although Popovich often spoke with sarcasm and was serious in front of the media, everyone in the team knew that he was humorous and humane. Popovich's coaching not only left a brilliant record, but also influenced generations of players. Although his farewell was low-key, it will undoubtedly be forever engraved in NBA history.
