Nagelsmann: We have no right to underestimate any opponent

Germany will host Luxembourg in Group A of the 2026 World Cup qualifiers. Nagelsmann acknowledged Luxembourg's excellent form and urged his team not to underestimate their opponents.

Germany defeated Northern Ireland 3-1 in their last qualifying match, thanks to goals from Serge Gnabry, Nadim Amiri, and Wirtz. Germany currently sits in third place in Group A with three points, so they need to secure all three points to improve their chances of advancing to the World Cup finals.

Germany coach Nagelsmann said, "I don't think we have the right to underestimate any opponent. Luxembourg is in good shape, they play very comfortably and have shown the ability to adjust tactics in recent games, so I predict this will be a tough game."

"I never say in a team meeting that we have to win the game by a big score. This kind of talk neither motivates the team nor shows respect to the opponent."

When asked whether German legend Muller will join the German coaching staff next year, Nagelsmann said, "Muller is certainly a very suitable candidate, but his contract with Vancouver Whitecaps will not end until the winter of 2026. As far as I know, Vancouver Whitecaps will return to training around June 26, 2026."

"I've spoken to him a few times and he's very happy in Vancouver, in great form and scoring a lot of goals. He's pushing the team forward there and wants to continue doing so after the World Cup. So I'm going to make a bold prediction that he won't be taking an assistant position with me or any other coach in the summer."

In addition, Dortmund defender Schlotterbeck has returned to the German squad after recovering from injury. When asked whether Schlotterbeck would start, Nagelsmann said, "We are always in coordination with the club. I have no interest in getting players injured again. But with only eight months left until the World Cup, we can't be overly cautious, and he may start from the start."
