According to a report by the Spanish media outlet El Mundo on Monday, Xabi Alonso's coaching career at Real Madrid appears to be coming to an end.
On December 7th local time, Real Madrid lost 0-2 to Celta Vigo at home. With this result, they now sit second in La Liga with 36 points (11 wins, 3 draws, 4 losses), falling from a 5-point lead over Barcelona at the top of the table to a 4-point deficit behind their arch-rivals.
According to El Mundo, Real Madrid's management held an emergency meeting immediately after the defeat, discussing Xabi Alonso's future for several hours. The meeting continued until after 1 a.m. local time, ultimately concluding that Real Madrid's midweek Champions League match against Manchester City at home would be Xabi Alonso's last chance.
The report went on to point out that Real Madrid has begun searching for Alonso's successor, with top candidates including Zinedine Zidane, Jürgen Klopp, and Castilla coach Álvaro Arbeloa. Spanish TV presenter Josep Pedro and TA Real Madrid correspondent Mario Cortegat added that Zidane and Klopp are currently excluded from the shortlist – the former still prioritizes coaching the French national team, while the latter is content with his position as head of global football strategy at Red Bull.
