The 31-year-old Nergaard has officially joined Arsenal and signed a two-year contract. Nergaard said he is looking forward to playing in the Champions League with the team.
Nergaard, who is from Denmark, previously played for Brentford and contributed 5 goals and 4 assists for the "Bees" in the 2024/25 Premier League season.
In an interview, Nergaard said that participating in the UEFA Champions League has always been a major goal of his career.
"I'm very excited because I had kind of given up on this dream when I was in the latter stages of my career," Neergaard said. "I just turned 31 and signed a new contract with Brentford. Miracles can certainly happen at Brentford, but the chances of playing in the Champions League together may be slim."
"But now I finally have the opportunity to hear the theme song of the Champions League and be part of the Champions League journey. This has been my dream since I was a child. I once thought it would be impossible for me to achieve this, but now it has finally come true, which makes me very happy."
Nergaard continued, "My playing style has changed over the years. I used to be a more offensive player, but now I play more of a defensive midfielder role. For me, it is very important for the team to have a good defensive system, and I hope I can contribute in this regard."
"I just had a season where I was involved in a lot of goals and I hope to continue this into the new season. I don't know how the coach will use me yet, but I hope to have a certain degree of freedom to participate in the offense."
Additionally, Nergaard shared, “Both Ødegaard and David Raya were full of praise for Arsenal and kept describing the club as feeling like home. I think that’s great, especially when someone like Ødegaard not only praises the players and coaching staff, but also speaks highly of the staff around the club, such as members of the media department, so I’m really looking forward to meeting everyone.”
