Athletic Bilbao came from behind to defeat Qarabağ 3-1 on matchday 3 of the 2025/26 UEFA Champions League League Phase at San Mamés on Wednesday.

In the first half, Andrade scored with a difficult angle volley, and Guruzeta found the net with a long-range effort. In the second half, Navarro netted a stunning wondergoal, while Kashchuk's volley was blocked off the goal line. In a crucial moment, Guruzeta found the net again with a long-range shot. In the end, Athletic Bilbao came from behind to defeat Qarabağ 3-1. Following this round of matches, having secured their first victory, Lehiok are currently 21st on the table with three points. Qarabağ, who suffered their first defeat in all competitions in two months, are currently 13th with six points.

First Half

Just 50 seconds into the match, Qarabağ launched a deadly quick counterattack. Aymeric Laporte misjudged a clearance inside his own penalty area. After successfully beating the offside trap, Leandro Andrade quickly followed up, intercepted the ball and took a few steps before volleying the ball into the bottom left corner of the net with his right foot from a difficult angle at the right side of the box. Qarabağ quickly broke the deadlock in a lighting fast fashion to take a 0-1 lead! This is already the Cape Verde international winger's fifth goal in the Champions League this season (including the qualifying rounds)!

In the 9th minute, Andrade passed back from the byline at the right side of the box. Matheus Silva quickly followed up and upon receiving the pass, volleyed with his right foot from a difficult angle at the right side of the box, but his shot was saved by Unai Simón.

Shortly thereafter, Alejandro Rego made a through pass from the front. After successfully beating the offside trap, Oihan Sancet quickly followed up, got the ball and took a few steps, before volleying the ball from the center of the box against the outrushing Mateusz Kochalski, but his shot flew high out of the pitch.

In the 18th minute, Rego's made a through pass from the right wing. Gorka Guruzeta quickly followed up by, bgot the ball and dribbled into the right side of the box before volleying with his right foot. His shot was initially blocked and cleared off not far awat by Kochalski's outstreched legs. Rego quickly followed up and upon picking up the loose ball, made a follow-up shot with his right foot from the center of the box, but his shot flew high out of the pitch.

Six minutes later, Yuri Berchiche passed back from the left side of the box. Nico Williams stopped the ball and adjusted his angle before taking a right-footed long shot from outside the penalty area, but his shot was deflected off by Kady Borges and went just slightly wide of the top right corner of the post.

In the 25th minute, Mikel Jauregizar crossed into the box from the right wing. Guruzeta rose high and attempted with a header in the box, however his effort flew high out of the pitch.

In the 40th minute, Jauregizar made a long pass from his own back half. After successfully beating the offside trap, Guruzeta quickly followed up, got the the ball and took a few steps before striking the ball into the bottom right corner of the empty net with a left-footed long shot against the outrushing Kochalski from the edge of the penalty area. Athletic Bilbao equalized Qarabağ at 1-1!

At the end of the first half, the score between Athletic Bilbao and Qarabağ was tied at 1-1 going into the break.

Second Half

Both teams switched sides as the match continued. In the 50th minute, Alex Berenguer crossed into the box from the left wing. Aitor Paredes quickly followed up and upon receiving the pass, attempted with a header from a very close distance in the box, however his effort went just over the crossbar. Athletic Bilbao missed a golden opportunity to overtake Qarabağ!

20 minutes later, Berenguer passes horizontally from the front. Robert Navarro stopped the ball, adjusted his angle, and fired a right-footed long shot from the edge of the penalty area. The ball flew straight into the top right corner of the net, turning it into a wondergoal past Kochalski who was unable to save it. Athletic Bilbao came from to lead Qarabağ 2-1!

In the 85th minute, Abdellah Zoubir made a through pass from the left wing. After successfully beating the offside trap, Oleksiy Kashchuk quickly followed up and took a few steps, before volleying with his left foot from a difficult angle at the left side of box against outrushing Simón, but his shot was blocked off the goal line by Berchiche. Qarabağ missed a golden opportunity to equalize!

3 minutes later, Jauregizar headed the ball from the left wing. Upon receiving the pass, Guruzeta took a right-footed long shot from outside the penalty area, which flew into the bottom left corner of the net to score his second goal, securing the victory for Athletic Bilbao at 3-1!
