Mainz 05 announced on their official website on Wednesday that their Danish head coach, Bo Henriksen, has been sacked effective immediately.
According to Mainz 05's official statement, Henriksen's assistant coaching staff will also be immediately dismissed following this personnel change.
Until a new head coach is appointed, U23s team coach Benjamin Hofmann will temporarily serve as the interim first-team head coach.
Regarding the decision to sack Henriksen, Mainz 05's Sporting Director, Christian Heidel, said: "Mainz 05 is incredibly grateful to Bo Henriksen. In what seemed like a hopeless situation, he united the club and the entire city, leading us out of the relegation zone and, a year later, to UEFA Conference League with his empathetic and passionate coaching style."
"However, the world of football is ever-changing, and there are always adjustments that must be made for sporting reasons. Despite everyone's best efforts to find solutions, until the very last moment, we, along with Bo, realized we had reached this point, and the departure is incredibly painful."
Bo was an outstanding coach and a truly wonderful person. We sincerely wish him all the best. He will forever hold a place in our hearts and in the club's history, and we always welcome his return. "
The 50-year-old Henriksen rose to fame several years ago when he led Midtjylland to a Danish Cup victory.
In February 2024, Henriksen succeeded former Huddersfield Town manager Jan Siewert as Mainz 05's new head coach.
After helping the club avoid relegation, Henriksen faced a difficult start to last season, winning only two of their nine matches. However, a strong comeback later in the season propelled the club to a sixth-place finish, securing a surprising UEFA qualification spot.
This summer, after selling striker Jonathan Burkhardt to Eintracht Frankfurt, naturally, this presented Die Nullfünfer the pressing issue of signing a reliable striker to replace him.
However, this problem has been proven to have been poorly handled, leading to a dismal league performances, placing the club at the bottom of the table, and an early exit from the DFB-Pokal against Stuttgart, ultimately resulting in Henriksen's dismissal.
It's worth noting that although they were temporarily in the top three places in the UEFA Conference League, apart from the equally poorly performing Fiorentina, Mainz 05 had not yet faced any opponents of similar caliber from Europe's top five leagues. Therefore, the club's good performances in this competition did not prevent calls for Henriksen's dismissal.
During his year-and-a-half managing Die Nullfünfer, Henriksen coached the Bundesliga club in 69 matches across all competitions, achieving 27 wins, 18 draws, and 24 losses, with a win percentage of 39.13%.
